Today was a pleasant break from our daily work schedule, and gave us the opportunity to learn more about the city of Hyderabad. We started off the day by taking a trip to the Indian School of Business (ISB) to see the making of the independent film “Supermen of Malegaon”. Although the movie was in Hindi and the subtitles were difficult to read, it gave us the chance to explore a different side of Indian cinema and culture. Having watched numerous high budget Bollywood movies, the thriving independent film industry that lurks in the shadows of Indian film was a surprise to me. The lack of over the top musical numbers and needlessly expensive sets may have rekindled my interest in Indian cinema. More so than anything, the hope and pride that is imparted to the local community through these movie endeavors helped me better understand the impact of this industry. After our visit to the ISB, we had the opportunity to listen to Dr. Luther talk about the “romantic” history of Hyderabad. Despite visiting Hyderabad 3 times in the past 7 years, I was surprised at how much there is to know about the history of a single city.
On a lighter note, we were able to finally visit an authentic Indian restaurant. By the end of our 2 hour meal I think everyone was able to satisfy their craving for Indian food. After having my first taste of Hyderabad food in a long time, I am really looking forward to being able to try some of the other local cuisines over the next 8 weeks.

I went through the same feelings when I went to Hyderabad in 2008 with Duke Engage. It’s such a different experience not going to see family. You fall in love with your own culture again, but for totally different reasons. I hope you guys are having fun and I am looking forward to reading all your blogs!
PS, go to Chutney’s and Panjabi by Nature to eat…both are AMAZING!
