Given the fact that today was a Sunday and a national holiday back in the states, we spent most of the day at home; cleaning and relaxing. We were, however, treated to a wonderful meal at a Hyderabadi Chinese restaurant and were surprised by the Prasads who brought along a delicious and beautifully decorated cake to celebrate Independence Day. Therefore, because of the relaxing nature of the day, I think I’ll use this blog to talk about some of the potential improvements we’re all hoping to make at the Nirmal Nagar School.
Currently, the situation is rather grim. Unfortunately, because many of the kids in the neighborhood don’t attend Nirmal Nagar, the school has been rather neglected by the inhabitants, and, because of it’s use as a neighborhood trash receptacle and a nightly hang out for the drunk, it simply doesn’t have that warm and welcoming feeling that one would expect at a school. In order to rectify the situation, and allow Nirmal Nagar to have a look and feel reminiscent of the fantastic pupils that attend, we hope to make a few much needed improvements, which I’ll list:
- Build a bigger wall! Now, I know this sounds a little like we’re trying to make a prison, and not a school, increasing the height of the existing wall will keep out the unwanted heaps of garbage currently thrown in, and will keep out the neighborhood drunks…and their spit.
- Paint the wall. In order to make the taller wall less reminiscent of a prison, we’d like to coat it in a fresh coat of paint and hopefully add a little student artwork to make it really cool!
- I think the Prasads also have a guy replacing the current outdoor ground covering (large flat gray stones) with something newer and more durable.
- We also hope to make a few smaller improvements, like adding wastepaper baskets so that the students can more hygienically dispose of their trash rather than simply throwing it on the floor as is currently the modus operandi.
We all hope that we’ll be able to make these changes (just need to raise some funds!), which, at least in my opinion, will ensure that the Nirmal Nagar School will feel more like a school than just an ordinary building.
Again, Happy 4th of July!
Also, congratulations to the Germans for making it to the World Cup semi-finals! Auf geht’s Deutschland!
